Why I cancelled my readathon last year // Why it’s back!

As you might have noticed by my pinned current tweet on my Twitter, I have advertised my month-long readathon, that I created September last year.

I came up with the idea while trying to think of a book series I would like to read, along side a children’s series. “The Chronicles of Narnia” does both.

I decided that over the space of a month it is plenty of time to read the short 7 book series and it will get people reading again as it is a simple level to start back up reading.

Sadly no one was able to join in or promote my readathon, so I shelved it for the year. But as it’s been a whole year already, I thought I would try and bring it back this year. Hopefully a few if not a lot of people will be interested in trying it this year.

Not only will it give my blog more publicity. It will also encourage new and old readers. ????

I hope you join me this year and I look forward to us all completing the NarnAThon challenge by 30th September.

    Happy Reading!

    Beginning of “Prologue” (WIP #2)

    PRESENT DAY (December. 1999)

It was another bitterly cold, December afternoon in late 1999. There was a lean,, dirty-looking, belligerent, male. He had an unfriendly face and looked no younger than 63. He wore an old, faded greyed black, double breasted suit with a classic worn-in, English man‘s black, top hat. To any young person passing, he would have looked like he was in some form of fancy dress.

He walked with a heavy weight emphasised on his right leg. Not many people knew that his limp had been caused many years ago, when there was nothing that could have been done, to correct the problem. He always refused to walk with the much needed cane, he had laying dormant in his living room. He was a very proud man, who never let on to any pain he may have felt, instead opting for a longer than intended walk, to wherever he fancied that day. [+300 words]

Beginning of Chapter 1 (WIP #1)

There stood a shadow six foot six, dressed in dark clothes and soaking wet. The rain was rushing down heavy and cold. The man was hiding in the shadows aware of each person passing. No one would look in his direction in fear of what was there.

There was a mother with her two little children on her way back from the supermarket and a teenager on his way home from a friend’s house unaware of what was near. They would go on to recount how they scurried past and did not look him in the eye. This image struck fear into the street that night. Something as glinting in the darkness from the reflection of the street lights. No one dared to walk too close in fear of attack. There was something shifty and dangerous about the man in black.

This was not the regular look to the area. In the summer it was a street filled with children’s laughter and tears as they played kiss chase and hopscotch in the warm filled bright evenings. The teenagers booming their music too late for a school night and the mothers and fathers sat with their cold drinks talking over the fences and walls between neighbours. It was a happy time, and a happy place normally. [500+ words]

  • The Library

    September = School, right?

So it’s September already. Well, technically it’s mid-September 2018. As far as I can remember September always reminded me of school. Even now it still does. September in my head always reminds me of that “back to school” vibe that everyone in the blogging community uses year after year, well here’s my version…

As a library volunteer with a library next to a school that often uses our services, it dawns on me when school is open & closed. We very often see the classes from the school come into the library to collect their books for the term, normally there is a theme such as animals or trains that the classes have chosen for the year.

I see a lot of children pass through the library with parents also & we tend to have a reading challenge in the summer so that children don’t stop reading or struggle when going back to school in the autumn.

I am a great believer in learning but struggle myself. I haven’t got a learning difficulty but I find it very hard to study for more than a few months at a time & keep concentration. In the past, I have quit 2 courses & failed one before. How I manage to continue blogging over a year later, is a miracle but this blog is my favourite past-time.

Anyway back to school (haha, see what I did there? No? Never mind!). I believe that September is a month of change; the new school year (which makes me think I can start afresh). Also, it’s the time when the season is changing soon, with the cooler weather – I’m all for it, after this ridiculous 2018 UK Summer heatwave.

How do you feel about the month of September? Do you get that back to school vibe even if you have no children (maybe they are a part of your job?) Also are you looking forward to the Autumn & the weather it brings?

    [REVIEW] Harry Potter 2 (&tCoS)

Nearly everyone is aware of Harry Potter. This week marks the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter & Chamber of Secrets being published.

This is my review on the second book in the Harry Potter series and hopefully will not encounter too many spoilers. It is a solid sequel to book number one and is a reread for me, over 10 years later.

This book takes off from the first in the series as we follow Harry through his summer holidays and 2nd year at Hogwarts. It has quite a few familiar faces and a few new ones.

This book is a children’s classic that is well-known throughout Europe, UK & America and other places, for both its film series and books. It has been made popular everywhere.

My favourite character to read about is Dobby. He causes mayhem throughout the book but is kind with a sassy attitude (when not beating literally himself up!) Also he looks out for Harry when no-one else seems to.

My least favourite character to read about was the Dursleys are they are repulsive and luckily don’t feature much in this adventure… but when they do, they are horrible to our hero Harry.

This book is a fun read but the themes of the book are slightly more mature than the first in the Harry Potter series. I am looking forward to continuing my re-reading of the complete 7 book series and I know the series not only gets longer but darker and more sinster in each book.

Would I recommend this book? Of course. Any age can read this book from young children to the elderly.

Do you like this series? Are you celebrating the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter? What is your favourite book & characters in the series? Please write your thoughts in the comments below
