Why I eat local and mostly avoid chain restaurants

What I like about eating local (including being closer to where I live)

I live in a small (yet expanding) village, in Wales. I find eating in local pubs and restaurants easier, than searching out for chain restaurants. This might be because it’s easier to get to, I know the location and it’s always nice when I bump into friends I know and catch up with.

Local pubs tend to be smaller in size and have their own choice of food and specials, so even if they have a sister pub (same landlord, different pub) they tend to have slightly different menus and prices.

I also find local pubs make it easier, as a disabled person, to access because I find it hard going further than where I live most of the time. So when going to a chain pub that tends to be further away and it makes it harder for me to get there, especially as I don’t drive and rely on lifts, or my bus pass..

Some negatives of eating nearby (including different menus, difficult parking and higher prices)

Some of the negative side of local pubs include having a car park that is smaller so when locals try and get a space it is harder, especially on rugby and football big matches such as the yearly Rugby 6 Nations and all major football matches.

In the opposite direction, when it’s a quiet time sometimes visiting an empty pub can be lonely, whereas major chains around the country tend to have an influx of customers all year round and at lots of different times.

The chains also tend to have the same menu, and mostly cheaper prices in all their restaurants, so if you’ve been before you know roughly what to expect on the menu

    My final verdict

Although I do like eating and drinking local, supporting local landlords and keeping their businesses open. I am definitely open to, when I’m in the city such as Cardiff, popping into the local wetherspoons for a quick drink or bite to eat. I am not completely dismissive of chain restaurants if I am nearby, but I openly choose mostly my local pub when I can.

    Writing Wednesdays #2 // 2021 update

I haven’t done an update post like this, in over a year.

I decided in 2020 I would have a break from writing and put my novels on hiatus for a year, but now I have started to miss writing blog posts, as well missing writing my fiction work.

I have got 4 potential novels that I am writing with very different themes from mental health fiction, to fiction crime. I am hoping to be under the young adult category and have published at least 1 novel, if not more, within 2 years. I don’t mind if I self-publish or traditional.
In the world, 2020 has been a nightmare for everyone, especially areas and countries hit bad with Covid-19/Coronavirus. Where I live was hit at its worst right now, in December 2020. We thought we were out of the woods months ago but Covid hit back badly.

Since Covid, I like many others, felt a slump in my writing and personal life too. When I should have made the most of free time, due to quitting the library shifts (due to a Covid scare and it having to close with temporary restrictions, earlier in the year!) & the various restrictions in and out of Lockdown for Wales, I actually became less attentive to my blog (You will notice not many posts were done this year) & stopped writing my fiction work completely.
I felt drained and it is only now with the promise of a fresh start in the new year and a new 2021 diary, did I feel up to carrying on with my blog and writing. I am hoping for a fresh start for 2021. I am aiming to complete at least one of my novels by the end of the year 2021 and I also want to regularly post on my blog again.

As I have fell out of love with books and want to explore other areas such as home care, food/drink, TV/film reviews, etc, I will be doing lots of new content next year. So look out for it.
I know I change it up a lot on my blog, especially since 2019, but please stick with me as I like writing for my favourite hobby, but also because I love to read other people’s opinions about what I post!

My favourite Autumn & Winter Food & Drinks.

This season is when people change tastes in food & drinks. I am going to give you my top things to try over the Autumn. I will be mentioning my favourite brands but this post will not be sponsored. It is just a list of my personal favourites. One is specific to my home country, one is a particular brand & one is a personal favourite…

Costa (coffee) Autumn Hot Drinks Range

I love going to costa when the weather changes, nothing says Fall like a hot chocolate or coffee (latte, size; medium). The store is always decorated lovely &
give a warm coffee smell and relaxing vibe. I tend to go here at least twice over the Fall time for this warming experience. They also do a pumpkin & caramel in spiced range too I have yet to try.

    A mug of Hot Chocolate

This is a winter Staple for most people. I find in the winter I just want to curl up with a nice hot chocolate, watch some TV or read a good book. Hot Chocolate gives me the image of a person curled up in a baggy winter knit clutching a mug smiling. There is a particular brand I use but there are many out there to choose from, so please try a few different choices before you pick your new favourite.

    Welsh lamb Cawl (Wales special)

This is the ultimate Winter meal that is currently (2018) available at your local Wetherspoons, in Wales (UK). It is on the speciality menu for Wales, celebrating Welsh Local Produce. I myself have tried this particular dish on a hot summer day but it is perfect for a Winter dish. It is effectively a lamb & vegetable soup. I find it gorgeous tasting & very rich in flavour. I recommend this dish to anyone visiting Wales in the winter to try it out. Honestly, you won’t regret it, I promise.

I hope this brief & interesting list gets you warm inside & makes you want to go out and enjoy the cooler weather, as much as you liked the Summer! Tell me in the comments what your favourite Autumn/Winter food and drinks are!
